Collection: Wooden Plaques

Japanese wooden plaques are small wooden boards used for prayers, wishes, or as commemorative items in Japan.

Ema (絵馬) are the most common type—found at Shinto shrines, where people write their wishes or prayers on the plaques and hang them for the gods to receive. They often feature images of animals, deities, or symbols of good fortune.

Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) originated as wooden travel passes during the Edo period, used by travelers to prove permission to cross certain regions. Today, they are often reproduced as souvenirs or collectibles, keeping the historical tradition alive.
