This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden charm comes from Hiruzen National Vacation Village (蒜山国民休暇村), located in the scenic Hiruzen Highlands of Okayama Prefecture. Known for its wide open landscapes, cool climate, and views of the Hiruzen Three Peaks (蒜山三座), the area has long been a popular destination for nature lovers and travelers seeking a peaceful retreat.

The front of the plaque features bold calligraphy reading 通行手形, evoking the historic travel permits of the Edo period. Alongside it are inscriptions referencing the region, including 蒜山国民休暇村, as well as 美作国・伯耆国, indicating the historical provinces that surround the Hiruzen area. The phrase 守護代 suggests a protective role, reinforcing the charm’s function as a talisman.

Attached to the top is a braided red-and-gold cord with a small bell. In Japanese folk belief, the gentle ringing of the bell serves to ward off evil spirits and purify one’s path, making it especially meaningful for travelers.

Tsuko-tegata like this are cherished as nostalgic souvenirs. This example from Hiruzen National Vacation Village beautifully reflects the natural charm and historical identity of the region while symbolizing protection, safe journeys, and good fortune.
