VTT157 - Tsuko-Tegata from Akiyoshidai 秋吉台
This traditional Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden charm is a finely crafted travel talisman associated with Akiyoshidai (秋吉台) and the famous Akiyoshidō Cave (秋芳洞) in Yamaguchi Prefecture—one of Japan’s most celebrated limestone cave systems.
Made from warm-toned natural wood in the classic pentagonal shape, the front bears bold calligraphy reading 通行手形, accompanied by smaller inscriptions referencing 開洞記念 (cave opening commemoration) and the historical name 長州秋吉台, linking the piece to the region’s heritage. A vermilion seal adds an official, document-like character reminiscent of Edo-period travel permits.
Suspended from a red-and-white braided cord, the piece is adorned with a decorative tassel in deep indigo tones and multiple small metal bells. When gently moved, the bells produce a soft, layered chime—traditionally believed to ward off evil spirits and ensure safe passage, especially meaningful for a site associated with exploration and natural wonder.
