VTT185 - Tsuko-Tegata from Hyakusaiji Temple 百済寺
This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) is a traditional Japanese wooden travel plaque associated with Hyakusaiji Temple (百済寺), one of the historic temples of the Koto Sanzan (湖東三山) region in Shiga Prefecture.
Crafted in the classic pentagonal shape inspired by traditional ema prayer plaques, the front features bold black calligraphy reading 百済寺 alongside the inscription 湖東三山 (“Koto Three Mountains”), referring to the celebrated group of Tendai Buddhist temples renowned for their ancient architecture and seasonal beauty. The phrase 庭園巡り (“garden pilgrimage”) evokes the tranquil temple gardens and scenic temple routes that attract visitors throughout the year. A vivid red seal stamp adds an authentic touch of pilgrimage culture.
The reverse side bears the inscription 参詣手形 (“pilgrimage pass”), indicating its role as a commemorative keepsake for temple visitors and travelers. The soft natural wood grain, red-and-white braided cord, and small silver bell complete the nostalgic charm of the piece. Traditionally, the bell was believed to ward off misfortune and protect the traveler on their journey.
Elegant in its simplicity, this tsuko-tegata beautifully captures the spirit of Japanese temple pilgrimage culture and the quiet atmosphere of the historic temples of Shiga.
