This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque is a commemorative travel talisman associated with Shinano Province (信濃国), evoking the historic landscapes of central Japan and the legacy of Edo-period travel.

Crafted from richly grained natural wood, the front is boldly inscribed with 通行手形, symbolizing safe passage and protection for the bearer. Alongside, the inscription 信濃国守護代 references the historical administrative role of a provincial military governor, adding a layer of cultural and historical depth. A vermilion seal enhances the authenticity, recalling the official markings once used on travel permits.

The reverse carries a traditional inscription explaining the purpose of the tegata, stating that the holder is granted safe passage throughout the land. It also references 当所形状持参者 (the bearer of this pass), echoing the formal language of Edo-period checkpoints. Additional red seals reinforce its auspicious and official character.

Suspended from a braided red-and-white cord and accented with a small bell, the plaque produces a gentle chime believed to ward off misfortune and ensure protection along one’s journey.

Combining historical symbolism with refined craftsmanship, this tsuko-tegata serves as both a meaningful souvenir and a timeless charm for safe travels, protection, and good fortune.
