VTT154 - Tsuko-Tegata from Oniiwa 鬼岩
This traditional Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque originates from Oniiwa (鬼岩), a dramatic rock formation area in Gifu Prefecture known for its rugged cliffs and legends of demons (oni).
Crafted from natural wood in the classic pentagonal shape, the front is illustrated with a striking landscape of craggy rocks and mountain scenery, representing the distinctive terrain of Oniiwa. The inscription meaning “The bearer of this pass is permitted to pass through Oniiwa, and their safety is assured,” echoing the historic function of travel permits in Japan.
The reverse features bold calligraphy reading 通行手形, accompanied by vermilion seals that evoke the authority of official documents from the Edo period. A small hanging bell is attached by a cord, producing a gentle sound when moved—traditionally believed to ward off evil spirits and offer protection along one’s journey, particularly fitting for a place associated with oni folklore.
Finished with a red-and-white braided cord and an original tag, this tsuko-tegata is both a meaningful souvenir and a symbolic charm. It embodies the spirit of safe passage, protection, and the mystical atmosphere of Oniiwa’s legendary landscape.
