This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) is a vintage wooden travel plaque from Ryūgadō Cave (龍河洞) in Tosa (土佐), present-day Kōchi Prefecture)—one of Japan’s most famous limestone caves, renowned for its vast underground formations and archaeological significance.

Crafted in the traditional pentagonal shape from natural wood, the plaque features bold calligraphy reading 通行手形, recalling the official travel permits of the Edo period. The front is vividly illustrated with a white rooster, a symbolic figure often associated with good fortune and vigilance, alongside imagery of the cave interior and pottery forms discovered within Ryūgadō—referencing the site’s ancient Yayoi-period artifacts.

The reverse bears inscriptions such as 交通安全 (traffic safety), reinforcing its role as a protective charm for safe journeys. A vermilion seal stamp adds authenticity and a traditional touch, while the red-and-white braided cord and small bell enhance both its decorative appeal and spiritual meaning—the gentle chime believed to ward off misfortune.

Size: 8 x 10 x 2cm
