Tsugaru

Tsugaru Kokeshi are a traditional style of kokeshi dolls from the Tsugaru region in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. They are characterized by their slightly wider bodies, large heads, and vibrant hand-painted designs, often featuring peony or chrysanthemum flowers in bold colors like red, yellow, and green. Compared to other kokeshi styles, Tsugaru Kokeshi often have more elaborate decoration on both the head and body, reflecting the region’s artistic flair. Like others, they began as souvenirs for hot spring visitors and evolved into a cherished form of Japanese folk art.
