This distinctive Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque is a commemorative travel talisman from Mount Yari (槍ヶ岳), one of Japan’s most iconic peaks in the Northern Alps, revered by mountaineers for its dramatic spear-shaped summit.

Crafted from richly grained natural wood, the plaque follows the traditional pentagonal form inspired by Edo-period travel permits. The front is boldly inscribed with 通行手形, accompanied by smaller characters referencing 槍ヶ岳開祖 播隆 (Banryū, the ascetic monk associated with the mountain’s early ascent tradition), grounding the piece in the spiritual and historical culture of Japanese mountain worship.

The reverse bears a commemorative inscription certifying the ascent of 日本アルプス 槍ヶ岳, with text affirming the achievement of reaching the summit. Vermilion seals add an official, ceremonial touch, echoing the authority of historical checkpoint documents.

Suspended from a braided cord in subdued earth tones and finished with a small bell, the piece produces a gentle chime believed to ward off misfortune and protect travelers and climbers alike.
