VTT162 - Tsuko-Tegata from Okazaki Castle 岡崎城
This traditional Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque is a commemorative piece from Okazaki Castle (岡崎城), the historic birthplace of Tokugawa Ieyasu and a site deeply associated with the origins of the Tokugawa shogunate.
Carved from natural wood with a warm, visible grain, the front is boldly inscribed with 岡崎城之章 (Seal of Okazaki Castle), accompanied by 徳川十五代, referencing the fifteen generations of Tokugawa shoguns. A vermilion seal marked 観光記念 (“commemorative souvenir”) further emphasizes its role as a keepsake tied to this historically significant location.
The reverse features the iconic Tokugawa family crest (三つ葉葵)—the triple hollyhock—symbolizing authority and prestige. Beneath it is a carefully inscribed genealogy of the Tokugawa lineage, adding depth and historical resonance to the piece and connecting it directly to Japan’s feudal past.
Suspended from a traditional red-and-white braided cord, the plaque reflects classic Japanese talisman design, often carried or displayed as a charm for protection, safe travels, and good fortune.
