VTT183 - Tsuko-Tegata from Shimane 日御碕
This vintage Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) is a traditional Japanese wooden travel pass charm commemorating Hinomisaki Shrine and Lighthouse (日御碕) in Shimane Prefecture, a scenic coastal area famous for its dramatic seaside cliffs and historic lighthouse.
The front features bold calligraphy reading 日御碕 alongside an illustration of the iconic white lighthouse overlooking the Sea of Japan. The accompanying inscription references the lighthouse as “東洋一の灯台” (“the finest lighthouse in the East”), celebrating the landmark’s historic prominence and maritime significance. A red seal motif and delicate architectural illustration add to the nostalgic Showa-era travel aesthetic.
The reverse side displays the classic 通行手形 (“travel pass”) inscription together with blessings for 交通安全 (traffic safety), reflecting its role as a protective charm for safe journeys. The piece is finished with a red-and-white braided cord and a small metal bell that softly chimes when moved.
Warmly aged with a rich wood grain and traditional Japanese graphic style, this tsuko-tegata makes a beautiful collectible souvenir, evoking memories of coastal travel, pilgrimage culture, and retro tourism in Japan.
