K25060 - Traditional Tsugaru Kokeshi by Yoshiki Sato 佐藤佳樹
This Tsugaru kokeshi was crafted by Yoshiki Sato (佐藤佳樹), a respected second-generation kokeshi artisan from Nukuyu Onsen, Aomori Prefecture. The doll showcases classic elements of the Tsugaru style, known for its regional flair and creative freedom in decoration.
The doll’s body features bold red floral patterns, accented by geometric bands and delicate brushwork, all set against the warm, natural tone of the wood. Its softly smiling face and black painted hair add a charming and youthful presence. The tall, slightly flared body with minimalist design is characteristic of Tsugaru kokeshi — a form celebrated for its expressive simplicity and folk art roots.
Yoshiki Sato was born on September 26, 1949, as the eldest son of Zenji Sato, a prominent kokeshi maker in Nukuyu. After studying woodworking machinery in Odawara, he returned home in 1971 to apprentice under his father. He began producing kokeshi in earnest around 1972, and upon his father's passing in 1985, he took up the mantle to continue the family tradition.
Throughout his career, Yoshiki was not only dedicated to preserving the artistry of Tsugaru kokeshi but also played an active role in promoting the craft. He served as the chairman of the Tsugaru Kokeshi Craftsmen's Association, and frequently traveled to demonstrate his work in cities like Tokyo and Osaka.
He passed away in 2007 at the age of 59 from acute myocardial infarction. Today, his dolls are cherished not only as nostalgic folk art, but also as tributes to a life devoted to the continuity of Japan’s kokeshi heritage.
