K30052 - Tsugaru kokeshi by Abo Muchihide 阿保六知秀
This striking Tsugaru-style kokeshi was created by Abo Muchihide 阿保六知秀 (born 1950), one of the most respected contemporary artisans of the Tsugaru kokeshi tradition from Aomori Prefecture. Bold yet playful, the piece beautifully reflects the expressive spirit and technical precision for which Abo’s works are admired.
The doll features a beautifully balanced silhouette with a calm smiling expression, glossy black hair, and finely painted facial details that convey warmth and quiet charm. What makes this piece especially distinctive is the bold image painted across the body: a vivid Daruma motif, rendered in powerful shades of red, black, and deep purple. The intense eyes and dramatic facial lines of the Daruma contrast playfully with the gentle serenity of the kokeshi’s face above.
Daruma figures in Japanese folk culture symbolize perseverance, resilience, protection, and the fulfillment of wishes. By incorporating this iconic image into the kokeshi form, Abo transforms the doll into more than a decorative object—it becomes a spirited folk talisman carrying themes of determination and good fortune.
The strong concentric striping and rich coloration are characteristic of the Tsugaru tradition, known for its decorative complexity and dynamic visual rhythm. The piece reflects Abo’s ability to merge traditional craftsmanship with lively regional folk imagery rooted in the culture of northern Japan.
Born in 1950, Abo Muchihide began studying kokeshi while still in junior high school through the kokeshi club led by master artisan Sato Zenji. He formally apprenticed under Zenji from 1966, mastering woodturning and traditional Tsugaru painting techniques. Later, he established Abo Kokeshiya, where he continues producing kokeshi and zodiac figures alongside his son Masafumi. His works are admired for preserving historical Tsugaru styles while introducing bold creativity and strong folk-art character.
