This striking 45cm tall kokeshi is a commanding piece by Sato Zenni (佐藤善二), a Tsugaru craftsman known for his bold artistic expression and refined turning technique. Painted with a dramatic rendition of Daruma (Bodhidharma) — the legendary Buddhist monk symbolizing perseverance and enlightenment — this doll embodies the powerful aesthetic of the Tsugaru kokeshi tradition, which often features more varied and expressive motifs compared to other traditional types.

The head is capped with a squared hairstyle, painted in jet black, and the serene facial expression contrasts strongly with the intense Daruma face painted on the body. The body is detailed with concentric lathe-turned lines in earthy red, black, and purple hues, which frame the Daruma illustration beautifully.

Sato Zenni was born on May 14, 1925, in Morita Village, Aomori Prefecture, the second son of Sato Zenkichi and Hana. His wife, Nobu, also participated in the craft by painting kokeshi. Known as a friendly and capable man, Zenni was active not only as a craftsman but also as a leader in his local community. His career in kokeshi-making blended artistic craftsmanship with strong regional identity — and he was particularly admired for his Daruma-themed works, which convey strength, wisdom, and spiritual resilience.

After recurring heart problems, he passed away in 1985 at the age of 61. His legacy, however, lives on through expressive pieces like this one — a rare example of Tsugaru kokeshi that balances folk charm with a commanding visual presence.
