Location: 蝦夷地 Ezochi (Hokkaido) Size: 8 x 11 x 1.8cm One set of Tsūko-Tegata is a wooden travel pass themed around Ezochi (蝦夷地) was the historical name for Hokkaido and its surrounding areas, including parts of northern Honshu, Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands. During the Edo period (1603–1868), it was largely inhabited by the Ainu people, the indigenous group of the region. 1. 原生花園 (Genseikaen) – A pristine wildflower garden located near Abashiri, famous for its seasonal blooms, particularly in summer. It represents the untouched natural beauty of Hokkaido. 2. 温根湯 (Onneyu) – A well-known hot spring area in Kitami, cherished for its therapeutic waters. This place symbolizes relaxation and healing, a common theme in Edo-period travel culture. 3. 石北峠 (Sekihoku Tōge) – A mountain pass connecting the Kitami region with central Hokkaido, often covered in snow during winter. It signifies the harsh yet majestic landscapes of Ezochi. Tsuko-Tegata is a kind of wooden passport that was used in the Edo Period as an identity card for travelers when passing from region to region. They had been sold a lot in Showa period as mingei type souvenirs all over Japan. It's also a protector for safety and peace for family.
