VTT172 - Tsuko-Tegata from Nagasaki 長崎
This distinctive Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque is a commemorative travel talisman from Nagasaki (長崎), a historic port city long known as Japan’s gateway to international exchange.
Made from finely grained natural wood, the plaque retains the traditional pentagonal form inspired by Edo-period travel permits. The front is boldly inscribed with 長崎, accompanied by an elegant illustration of a Western-style church—evoking Nagasaki’s unique cultural landscape shaped by centuries of foreign influence and Christian heritage. A vermilion seal reading 観光 (sightseeing) further emphasizes its role as a travel keepsake.
The reverse features a detailed map of Nagasaki, highlighting notable landmarks such as churches, historical sites, and scenic points of interest. This cartographic design transforms the tegata into both a souvenir and a visual guide to the region.
Suspended from a red-and-white braided cord and finished with a small metal bell, the piece produces a soft chime believed to ward off misfortune and ensure safe journeys.
