VTT163 - Tsuko-Tegata from Kotohira Shrine 金刀比羅宮
This traditional Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque is a charming travel talisman from Kotohira Shrine (金刀比羅宮) on Mount Zōzu (象頭山) in Kagawa Prefecture—one of Japan’s most revered pilgrimage destinations dedicated to seafarers and safe journeys.
Crafted from natural wood with a rich, warm grain, the front features a bold red 金 emblem within a circle, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune, accompanied by inscriptions such as 開運招福 (“good luck and happiness”) and 交通安全 (“traffic safety”). The large calligraphy 御守 (protective amulet) emphasizes its role as a charm for protection and well-being.
The reverse is illustrated with a traditional sailing boat, a motif closely associated with Kotohira Shrine, long worshipped as a guardian of maritime safety. This imagery reflects the shrine’s historical connection to sailors, fishermen, and travelers who prayed for safe voyages across the seas. Vermilion seals further enhance its authenticity as a commemorative pilgrimage item.
Suspended from a red braided cord with a small bell, the plaque produces a gentle chime—believed to ward off evil and invite protection along one’s journey.
