VTT158 - Tsuko-Tegata from Nikkō 日光
This traditional Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque is from Nikkō 日光. Crafted from natural wood in the classic pentagonal form, the front features bold calligraphy reading 通行手形, alongside the inscription 日光道中, referring to the historic route leading to Nikkō during the Edo period. A delicate red illustration of a procession evokes the grandeur of daimyo processions that once traveled this road, while the Tokugawa family crest (葵紋) appears above, symbolizing the powerful shogunate lineage.
The reverse is richly inscribed with a lineage record of the Tokugawa family (徳川家康), listing successive generations and reinforcing the historical significance of the site. This detailed text gives the piece an educational and commemorative dimension beyond its role as a charm.
A small ceramic bell is attached with a traditional red-and-white braided cord, producing a soft chime when moved—believed to ward off evil spirits and ensure safe travels. The addition of vermilion seals further enhances its resemblance to official travel permits of the Edo period.
