VTT156 - Tsuko-Tegata from Okinawa 沖縄
This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque comes from Okinawa (沖縄), reflecting the unique cultural identity and island geography of Japan’s southernmost prefecture.
Crafted in the traditional pentagonal shape, the front is illustrated with a stylized map of Okinawa Island, marked with key locations such as Naha, Nago, Hedo, Kadena, and Chinen, along with the surrounding smaller islands. The playful design captures the spirit of travel and exploration, while subtly celebrating Okinawa’s distinct landscape and heritage.
The reverse features bold calligraphy reading 通行手形, alongside the phrase 交通安全 (traffic safety), emphasizing its role as a protective charm for safe journeys. A red stamp reading “OKINAWA” adds a souvenir-like touch, reinforcing its regional identity.
Attached with a red-and-white braided cord and a small metal bell, the piece produces a soft, gentle chime when moved—traditionally believed to ward off misfortune and protect the bearer while traveling. The combination of map imagery and classic talismanic elements makes this tsuko-tegata both decorative and meaningful.
