VTT147 - Tsuko-Tegata from Aso region 阿蘇
This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) set is a distinctive travel souvenir from the Aso region in Kumamoto, featuring references to some of its most iconic natural landmarks: Mount Daikanbō (大観峰), Mount Aso (阿蘇), and the scenic coastline of Kusasenri Beach (草千里浜).
Crafted from warm-toned wood, the piece is uniquely designed with three small hanging plaques, each inscribed with one of these famous locations. Together, they celebrate the dramatic volcanic landscape of Aso—one of Japan’s most breathtaking natural areas. The central backing board is decorated with a map of the Aso region, adding both visual interest and geographical context, making it especially appealing for collectors and travelers alike.
The main plaque bears bold calligraphy reading 通行手形, along with the phrase 交通安全祈願 (prayer for traffic safety) and 阿蘇観光記念 (Aso sightseeing commemorative), indicating its role as both a keepsake and a protective charm for safe journeys.
Finished with a traditional red-and-white braided cord and a small bell, this piece carries symbolic meaning—the bell’s gentle sound is believed to ward off misfortune and bring protection to travelers.
