VTT144 - Tsuko-Tegata from Hida Takayama 飛騨高山
This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) is a rustic wooden travel charm crafted from a natural slice of wood, preserving the bark along its edges and giving it an organic, folk-art character. Unlike the more formal, rectangular tegata, its rounded shape evokes a sense of nature and locality, often associated with mountain regions and traditional sightseeing areas. Handcrafted from natural shirakaba (white birch) wood.
The front is decorated with a vivid illustration of a traditional festival float (山車 / dashi) set against a mountainous backdrop, accompanied by the inscription Hida Takayama 飛騨高山—a historic town in Gifu Prefecture renowned for its beautifully preserved Edo-period streets and its famous seasonal festivals. The red seal further emphasizes its origin as a commemorative souvenir from this culturally rich region.
On the reverse side, hand-brushed calligraphy adds a poetic touch, reflecting the spirit of travel and remembrance. Such inscriptions often express sentiments about journeys, encounters, and the beauty of the place visited, enhancing the personal and nostalgic value of the piece.
A braided cord with a small bell is attached at the top. As with many traditional Japanese charms, the bell’s gentle sound is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring protection, especially for travelers.
