VTT140 - Tsuko-Tegata from Ena Gorge 恵那峡

VTT140 - Tsuko-Tegata from Ena Gorge 恵那峡

This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) travel charm comes from Ena Gorge (恵那峡), a scenic valley located along the Kiso River in Gifu Prefecture. Ena Gorge is celebrated for its dramatic rock formations, clear waters, and seasonal beauty, especially during autumn when the surrounding mountains are filled with vibrant foliage. The area has long been a popular sightseeing destination in central Japan.

The wooden plaque is shaped in the traditional form of an Edo-period travel permit, inscribed with bold calligraphy reading 恵那峡 (Ena Gorge). Beneath the characters is a small painted landscape depicting the gorge’s river and rocky cliffs, capturing the picturesque natural scenery that attracts visitors to the region. The sides of the plaque include additional calligraphy referencing the beauty and fame of the gorge.

Historically, tsuko-tegata were official travel passes required for movement between domains during the Edo period. Today they are produced as nostalgic souvenirs commemorating a journey.
