This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) comes from Sanzen-in (三千院), a historic Tendai Buddhist temple located in the quiet mountain village of Ōhara in northern Kyoto. Known for its moss gardens, ancient cedar trees, and serene atmosphere, Sanzen-in has long been regarded as a place of spiritual reflection and refined beauty.

The front of the wooden plaque bears large, expressive calligraphy reading 三千院, accompanied by additional inscriptions and a vermilion temple seal that authenticate the piece. The brushwork conveys a sense of solemnity and tradition, reflecting the temple’s long history dating back more than a millennium. The surrounding text references the temple and its sacred grounds, emphasizing the religious and cultural significance of the site.

The reverse side is marked with 参詣記念 (Pilgrimage Commemoration) along with the temple’s seal, indicating that the tegata was issued as a keepsake for visitors who came to pay respects. Such pieces serve as both souvenirs and protective charms for travelers.

Finished with a traditional braided cord, this Tsuko-Tegata echoes the historical travel passes once required during the Edo period to cross domain borders. Today it survives as a symbolic token of safe journeys and spiritual blessings. This example beautifully commemorates a visit to Sanzen-in, capturing the tranquil spirit of Kyoto’s mountain temples and the enduring tradition of pilgrimage in Japan.
