VTT128 - Tsuko-Tegata - Sensō-ji Temple 浅草寺
This is a vintage Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形), a traditional Japanese wooden travel charm, from the iconic Asakusa area in Tokyo. Tsuko-Tegata were historically used as travel passes during the Edo period, and today they serve as decorative talismans symbolizing safe journeys and protection.
The front side features a beautifully illustrated view of Sensō-ji Temple (浅草寺), Tokyo’s oldest temple and a prominent landmark of Asakusa. The bold red lantern depicted is the famous Kaminarimon (雷門), or "Thunder Gate," which serves as the grand entrance to the temple and is one of the most recognized symbols of Tokyo.
The reverse side includes the calligraphy for “Tsuko Tegata” (通行手形) along with blessings for 交通安全祈願 ("prayers for traffic safety") and a red temple seal stamp of Sensō-ji. A bell and braided cord complete the charm, often believed to ward off evil and bring good luck during travel.
