Large Size. This vintage Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形), or travel pass, hails from the historic Yumura Onsen (湯村温泉), a famed hot spring town located in the Tajima region (但馬国), present-day Hyōgo Prefecture. Once used as symbolic travel permits or souvenirs, these wooden plaques are reminiscent of Edo-period checkpoint passes and often served both decorative and protective purposes.
The front features a striking illustration of a traditional yellow paper lantern emblazoned with “湯村の関所” (Yumura Checkpoint), set beside a red wagasa (Japanese umbrella) and a tatami mat entrance—a nostalgic depiction of the tranquil hot spring town’s welcoming atmosphere.
