VTT123 - Tsuko-Tegata from Hakata 博多

VTT123 - Tsuko-Tegata from Hakata 博多

This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) hails from the vibrant city of Hakata, Fukuoka, and pays homage to the spirited atmosphere of traditional Japanese festivals. Crafted from wood and shaped like a miniature geta sandal, this piece is adorned with a striking illustration of a fierce festival warrior holding a red lantern. His dynamic pose, along with the vivid blue wave-patterned hakama and katana, embodies the proud and energetic spirit of Hakata’s famous festivals.

In folk beliefs, geta sandal were thought to ward off evil spirits due to the sound they make when walking ("karan-koron"). In some regions, small geta charms or figurines are used as lucky items for safe travel, health, or success.
