FT107 - wooden Japanese hina doll 雛人形
A vintage wooden Japanese hina doll (雛人形) set, inspired by kimekomi-style or simplified folk-style hina ningyō, traditionally displayed during Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day or Doll’s Festival) in Japan.
This minimalist, handcrafted pair of wooden dolls represents the Emperor and Empress (or Odairi-sama and Ohina-sama), key figures in the Hinamatsuri celebration. They are painted in a vibrant and stylized design with bold, geometric patterns.
Carved from wood and hand-painted in bright colors—predominantly vermilion red, green, blue, and gold—the dolls reflect a modern or folk interpretation of the classical court dress. The female figure (left) wears a long red kimono with hanging wisteria floral motifs and layered collars, evoking imperial court attire.
The male figure (right) dons a similarly colored top with a striped hakama-style bottom, referencing the formal dress of male courtiers. The sharply block-shaped bodies, simplified facial features, and angular robes lend the dolls a charming, sculptural aesthetic.
Mounted on a natural wooden base, which helps frame them as a decorative display item, perfect for seasonal or year-round presentation. These dolls are symbolic of peace, prosperity, and good fortune for young girls. Displayed on March 3rd for Hinamatsuri, they are meant to bless daughters with health and happiness. The use of wisteria motifs (fuji) further symbolizes elegance, refinement, and enduring beauty in Japanese tradition.
