A vintage Japanese shikishi board features a traditional Otafuku (お多福) mask mounted in relief, with handwritten calligraphy and decorative red cords. A joyful and iconic figure in Japanese folk culture, Otafuku is known as the goddess of mirth, good fortune, and laughter.

Otafuku (お多福) Mask. Otafuku, also known as Okame, is a round-faced woman with a bright smile, rosy cheeks, and closed eyes, symbolizing happiness, fertility, and good fortune. Her name means “much good fortune,” and she is a beloved character in Japanese theater and seasonal celebrations.

Tied in four decorative bows, the bright red cord enhances the festive appearance and may represent blessings and protection, often seen in talismans and ceremonial items.

Top right: 「お福さん」(Otafuku-san) – A warm, affectionate way to refer to Otafuku.

Left side: 「福徳」(Fukutoku) – Meaning “happiness and virtue”, reinforcing the auspicious theme.
