K10103 - Vintage omiyage kokeshi Sanjo Ohashi

A vintage omiyage kokeshi doll tribute to Sanjō Ōhashi (三條大橋), a culturally significant bridge in Kyoto, known historically as the terminus of the Tōkaidō Road—the ancient route connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto during the Edo period. For centuries, Sanjō Ōhashi was more than a bridge; it marked the beginning or end of long journeys, pilgrimages, and trade, and was often the first view of Kyoto for travelers arriving in the city.

The kokeshi itself is crafted in a stylized, modern souvenir form, with a wide, rounded head painted with a cheerful expression and delicate hair accessories, evoking the traditional appearance of a Kyoto maiko (apprentice geisha). She wears a hand-painted kimono adorned with seasonal motifs and a bright red accent, symbolizing good fortune and celebration.

One of the standout features is the painted parasol she holds in front of her body, delicately inscribed with brush-style characters and floral elements. This parasol not only serves as a visual cue of traditional Japanese aesthetics but also complements the scene of refined Kyoto life.

Attached to her base is a cylindrical post painted in the likeness of the iconic bridge's architectural column, featuring the calligraphy 三條大橋 (Sanjo Ohashi). These stylized posts can still be seen on the real bridge today, making this miniature a direct visual reference to the historic site.
