FT105 - Nishijin-ori Temari Ball 西陣織 手まり
Vintage handcrafted Nishijin-ori Temari Ball (西陣織 手まり) Nishijin-ori 西陣織—a luxurious woven textile traditionally produced in the Nishijin district of Kyoto, Japan. Known for its intricate patterns, shimmering silk threads, and gold brocade accents, Nishijin-ori has been prized for centuries, often used in kimono sashes (obi), Noh costumes, and temple furnishings.
A radiant mix of gold, crimson, indigo, ivory, and orange, with traditional Japanese motifs such as floral patterns, waves, and arabesques. The sphere is crafted in a geometric patchwork style, with carefully hand-sewn segments that enhance both its texture and dimensionality.
Historically, Temari were given as New Year’s gifts, symbolizing friendship, loyalty, and well-wishes for happiness and prosperity. The use of Nishijin-ori fabric elevates this Temari from a folk toy to a refined decorative art object, blending Kyoto's textile heritage with traditional craft.
