SHP55 - Japanese shikishi card

SHP55 - Japanese shikishi card

A vintage shikishi art board features an expressive ink painting of a Qilin (麒麟)—a mythical creature from East Asian folklore often described as a symbol of peace, wisdom, and prosperity. This artwork is rendered in an elegant combination of sumi-e (ink wash painting) and modern abstract calligraphy, blending traditional symbolism with contemporary Japanese brush techniques.

Qilin (麒麟). The central figure is a delicate, stylized creature with a deer-like body, dragon-like details, and a gentle, noble demeanor—characteristic traits of the Qilin, which is considered a mythical protector and a harbinger of good fortune.
The subtle red hooves and the gentle posture further enhance its graceful, benevolent presence.

A bold, fluid swirl of black and grey ink surrounds the creature, forming an almost aura-like enclosure. This shape evokes spiritual energy or cosmic movement, focusing attention on the mythical being and suggesting divine presence or protection.

Loose, gold-brushed calligraphy flows above the Qilin, possibly stylized kanji or symbolic strokes expressing harmony or celestial elements. The artist’s signature and red hanko (seal) in the lower left corner authenticate the piece. The white space and the delicate balance between movement and stillness reflect the Japanese wabi-sabi philosophy—finding beauty in imperfection and transience.
