SHP119 - Vintage Japanese Chigiri-e Shikishi card
A vintage Japanese chigiri-e shikishi card from 1990, showcasing a delicate and richly textured arrangement of flowers, created using traditional handmade paper collage techniques. The composition features an elegant bouquet of clematis-like blossoms in vivid shades of indigo, violet, and soft sky blue, interspersed with hints of burgundy and gentle greens. Each petal and leaf is carefully crafted with torn and layered washi paper, giving the artwork a soft, painterly appearance and subtle dimensionality.
Chigiri-e (ちぎり絵) is a traditional Japanese art form that involves creating images by tearing and layering pieces of hand-dyed washi paper (Japanese paper). The name comes from the word “chigiru” (ちぎる), meaning “to tear,” and “e” (絵), meaning “picture.”
Set against a cream-colored backing with faint natural patina, the shikishi board is bordered in gold, adding a refined touch to its vintage charm. A red artist’s seal mark is stamped in the lower left corner, indicating its authenticity and traditional roots.
This piece not only reflects the ephemeral beauty of nature, but also the tactile and poetic essence of chigiri-e—an art form that harmonizes paper, color, and emotion. A graceful and timeless display item for collectors of Japanese art, seasonal décor, or floral motifs.
