K05025 - Folktoy kokeshi daikon

K05025 - Folktoy kokeshi daikon

A vintage omiyage kokeshi dolls from Kagoshima. It is crafted in the unique shape of daikon radishes, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. Handcrafted from wood and painted in soft, earthy tones, the figure features a cheerful, rounded face and a black kimono accented with a gold cord and delicate landscape motifs, including trees and calligraphy. The top of the head mimics the leafy greens of a daikon, adding a whimsical agricultural flair.

A tradition that shows daikon has special signification is at Kyoto Temples like Senbon Shakadō (千本釈迦堂) and Rokuharamitsu-ji (六波羅蜜寺) hold “Daikon-Daki” (大根炊き) events in December. During these gatherings, large pots of daikon soup are prepared and served to visitors. Consuming the simmered radish is said to purify the body, ward off evil, and bring good health for the coming year. While this ritual focuses on health and spiritual cleansing, the hearty, nurturing qualities of daikon also subtly reinforce themes of abundance and well-being.

Root vegetables often have connotations of stability and long life, as they grow firmly in the earth. Daikon is sometimes seen as a sign of perseverance and resilience, qualities valued in Japanese culture.
