K25034 - Yajirō by Yoshiaki Sato 佐藤慶明

This 25cm Yajirō-style kokeshi doll is a classic work by artisan Yoshiaki Sato, born in 1936, a respected figure in the lineage of traditional kokeshi making. His work is rooted in the rich heritage of the Yajirō-kei tradition from Miyagi Prefecture, known for its precision turning, symmetrical forms, and vibrant lathe-painted decorations.

Crafted from polished wood, this piece features a graceful, layered body structure and a finely balanced silhouette. The face is delicately painted with almond-shaped eyes, softly arched brows, and a composed smile, framed by symmetrical hair patterns in deep black. The head is decorated with a traditional black crown design, and the body is accented with horizontal ring bands and stylized chrysanthemum-like motifs rendered in black—a refined expression of Yoshiaki Sato’s signature aesthetic.

Yoshiaki Sato was born in Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture, and trained under his father, Sato Fukuo (佐藤福雄), a highly respected kokeshi master. He began making kokeshi in the early 1960s, and eventually developed a distinct style that harmonizes strength in form with a gentle, minimalist beauty. His use of natural wood tones and limited color palettes allows the grain of the wood and the simplicity of the design to shine. Sato has also served as a mentor to younger artisans and has been involved in efforts to preserve traditional techniques within the Yajirō kokeshi-making community.
