K35005 - Yajiro by Ishikawa Tokujiro 石川篤次郎

A large 36cm tall kokeshi doll of the Yajirō style, created by the renowned artisan Ishikawa Tokujiro (石川篤次郎, 1915–2005). A master of traditional craftsmanship, Tokujiro was born into the celebrated Ishikawa family of Yajirō, Miyagi Prefecture, one of the core regions for traditional kokeshi production. The Ishikawa lineage is well known for preserving the distinct visual language of Yajirō kokeshi, and Tokujiro was no exception.

Crafted with a tall, cylindrical body and wide, rounded head, this piece embodies the balanced form that is typical of the Yajirō tradition. The doll is decorated with bold, free-flowing black brushwork, creating an abstract ribbon or floral motif that stands out against the smooth woodgrain. The lathe-turned rings that circle the body add rhythm and contrast, showcasing Tokujiro’s refined woodturning skills. Her face is delicately painted, with serene almond-shaped eyes, softly arched brows, and a quiet smile—hallmarks of Tokujiro’s elegant and minimalist approach to expression.

Ishikawa Tokujiro learned the craft from his older brother Ishikawa Heiji, after being born the second son of Ishikawa Kamejiro, another prominent kokeshi maker. Active from the pre-war era through to the end of the 20th century, Tokujiro developed a reputation for precision and traditionalism, while maintaining a unique artistic voice within the boundaries of classical form. His work was recognized in exhibitions and competitions throughout the country, and he continued creating kokeshi into his later years with great consistency and care.
