This rare and elegant Sakunami-style kokeshi over 70 years old was created by Harue Otokozawa 男沢春江, one of the few notable female artisans in the world of traditional kokeshi. Made in the characteristic form of the Sakunami lineage, which originates from the Sakunami region in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, this doll exhibits the quiet dignity and minimalist charm that defines the style.
The doll has a simple, cylindrical form with a subtly curved head and no exaggerated flourishes. Its surface features monochromatic floral brushwork—stylized black motifs gracefully wrapping around the body. The face is sparsely detailed with arched brows and narrow, almond-shaped eyes, giving the doll a tranquil, meditative presence. The wood has aged beautifully, gaining a warm patina that enhances its rustic, handcrafted character.
