TC99 - Nabeshima ware Chawan Matcha Bowl 鍋島焼

TC99 - Nabeshima ware Chawan Matcha Bowl 鍋島焼

This Nabeshima ware (鍋島焼) chawan is a refined example of Japanese porcelain craftsmanship, embodying both restraint and quiet sophistication.

Unlike many other ceramics that were made for commercial markets, Nabeshima ware was originally produced exclusively for the ruling Nabeshima clan of the Saga domain (present-day Saga Prefecture, Kyushu) during the Edo period (17th–19th century). These pieces were not sold to the public but were used as gifts for the Tokugawa shogunate, feudal lords, and high-ranking officials—making them symbols of political prestige and cultural sophistication.

Inside the bowl, a graceful spiral (渦文) emerges from the center, formed through careful throwing and glazing. This subtle detail not only adds visual interest but also enhances the experience of preparing matcha, guiding the whisk in a natural circular motion. The interior glaze deepens slightly in tone, providing a serene backdrop for the vibrant green of the tea.

The foot is cleanly finished, revealing the fine, smooth porcelain body beneath, with a warm firing ring that contrasts gently against the cool glaze. The precision and refinement of the base highlight the high level of craftsmanship associated with Nabeshima traditions.
