This Shino-yaki (志野焼) matcha bowl is a striking example of the bold yet poetic character that defines Shino ware. The thick, creamy feldspathic glaze blankets the surface in soft milky white, dramatically broken by vivid iron-red fire marks (hi-iro) and an expressive network of crackle (kannyū). These spontaneous patterns, born from high-temperature firing, give the bowl a powerful sense of movement and individuality.

The form is robust and reassuring in the hands, with gently swelling walls and a slightly uneven rim that adds to its handmade presence. Subtle pinholes and glaze pooling reveal the depth and thickness of the Shino glaze, while the foot shows traces of the clay body beneath—earthy and honest, grounding the piece in its material origins.

Highly prized in the tea ceremony, Shino chawan are celebrated for their warmth, generosity of form, and dramatic kiln effects. This bowl perfectly reflects the wabi-sabi aesthetic: beauty found in imperfection, fire, and chance. With use, the glaze will continue to soften and deepen in tone, allowing the chawan to mature gracefully alongside its owner.
