This Satsuma-yaki (薩摩焼) kensui is a refined waste-water bowl crafted for the Japanese tea ceremony, embodying the quiet strength and rustic elegance characteristic of southern Kyushu ceramics. Its history dates back to the late 16th century, when Korean potters were brought to the region following Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s invasions of Korea. These craftsmen laid the technical foundations that shaped Satsuma ware.

The bowl features a gently rounded, stable form with a subtly stepped profile that feels grounded and functional in the hand. Its surface is finished with a soft, ash-inflected glaze that flows naturally over the body, shifting between muted blue-gray and warm earthy brown tones. Fine speckling and kiln marks appear throughout, revealing the mineral-rich clay and the effects of high-temperature firing. The glaze pools and thins organically, creating depth and variation that reward close viewing.

A small, applied lug detail on the exterior adds both visual interest and a traditional accent often seen in kensui forms, reflecting its utilitarian purpose within the tea gathering. The interior is smoothly glazed, allowing for easy cleaning while maintaining a calm, understated aesthetic suitable for formal and informal tea settings alike.

Rooted in the long tradition of Satsuma ware, this kensui exemplifies the wabi-sabi sensibility—valuing natural textures, subtle irregularities, and restrained beauty. It is a functional yet contemplative piece, quietly supporting the ritual of tea while standing on its own as an expressive work of Japanese ceramic craftsmanship.
