TC50 - Chawan Matcha Bowl of Tokoname-yaki 常滑焼
This Tokoname-yaki (常滑焼) matcha bowl embodies the quiet strength and understated elegance for which Tokoname ceramics are renowned. Rooted in one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, the bowl reflects a long tradition of pottery that values material honesty, restrained form, and the natural effects of fire and clay.
The form is calm and well-balanced, with gently curving walls that rise naturally from a compact, grounded foot. The silhouette feels stable and reassuring in the hands, making it well suited for daily tea practice. The interior opens generously, allowing for smooth whisking of matcha while drawing the eye toward the subtly contoured center.
Its surface is finished in a soft, earthy glaze ranging from warm green tones, allowing the iron-rich Tokoname clay to quietly assert itself beneath. Fine speckling and subtle tonal variation appear across the surface, evidence of the firing process rather than decorative intent. In places, the glaze thins slightly, revealing the clay’s natural texture and enhancing the bowl’s tactile appeal.
The foot is deliberately left unglazed, showing a reddish-brown clay typical of Tokoname ware. This contrast between glazed and bare surfaces highlights the craftsmanship of the potter and reinforces the bowl’s honest, utilitarian character.
