TC49 - Chawan Matcha Bowl of Hakeme style 刷毛目
Vintage item, never used. This matcha bowl chawan in the Hakeme (刷毛目) style conveys a calm, understated beauty rooted in the aesthetics of Korean-influenced tea ceramics that were deeply admired in Japan. The form is gently open and well balanced, with softly flaring walls that sit comfortably in the hands, making it both visually pleasing and practical for the preparation of matcha.
The surface is defined by characteristic hakeme brushwork—broad, horizontal strokes of pale slip brushed over the clay body. These sweeping marks remain clearly visible beneath the translucent glaze, creating a rhythmic, layered texture that emphasizes movement and the potter’s hand. The glaze pools lightly in the recesses of the brush lines, producing subtle tonal variations from warm ivory to soft beige, while allowing hints of the underlying clay to emerge.
Fine crackle (貫入) can be seen across the glazed surface, adding depth and a sense of quiet age, while the interior reveals concentric wheel marks that draw the eye toward the center of the bowl. These traces reinforce the bowl’s handmade character and the meditative process behind its creation.
The foot is modest and unpretentious, finished in exposed clay that contrasts gently with the brushed and glazed body above. This grounding element enhances the overall harmony of the piece and reflects the wabi-sabi spirit central to tea culture.
