TC48 - Matcha Bowl Chawan of Shino-yaki 志野焼

TC48 - Matcha Bowl Chawan of Shino-yaki 志野焼

Vintage item, never used. This Shino-yaki (志野焼) matcha bowl, or chawan, embodies the gentle warmth and quiet rustic beauty that define the Shino tradition. The bowl is generously proportioned, with softly rounded walls that rise naturally from the foot, creating a comforting and open form well suited to the preparation and enjoyment of matcha.

The surface is covered in a milky white Shino glaze with subtle pinkish and beige undertones, a hallmark of the style. Fine iron speckles are scattered throughout, adding depth and visual interest, while faint horizontal traces from the potter’s wheel remain visible beneath the glaze, giving a sense of movement and handwork. In places, the glaze thins and pools unevenly, revealing the earthy clay body below and creating gentle transitions of tone and texture.

The foot is deliberately left more exposed, showing the coarse, sandy clay typical of Shino ware. Around the base, the glaze breaks and retreats, revealing warm, fired clay and subtle kiln marks that speak to the natural firing process. This contrast between the soft, luminous glaze and the raw clay foot adds balance and grounds the piece visually.

This chawan expresses the wabi-sabi aesthetic at the heart of Shino-yaki—an appreciation for softness, imperfection, and natural variation. It is a bowl that invites quiet contemplation, rewarding close observation and offering a calm, tactile presence with each use in the tea ceremony.
