TC47 - Chawan Matcha Bowl of Karatsu-yaki 唐津焼
This Karatsu-yaki (唐津焼) matcha chawan exemplifies the classic beauty of Chōsen Karatsu (朝鮮唐津), a style celebrated for its dramatic yet natural contrast of glazes and its deep connection to the aesthetics of the tea ceremony. The bowl is defined by the characteristic two-tone glazing: a soft, milky white feldspathic glaze flows gently over a darker iron-rich glaze beneath, meeting in an irregular, organic boundary that speaks directly to the spontaneity of the firing process.
The upper portion of the bowl is coated in a pale, almost snowy glaze that feels calm and open, subtly pooling near the rim and thinning in places to reveal warmth from the clay body below. Beneath it, the darker glaze—ranging from charcoal gray to deep brown—anchors the form visually, creating a strong sense of grounding and balance. Where the two glazes meet, the transition is neither sharp nor controlled; instead, it appears softened and blurred, evoking mist settling over earth or a horizon dissolving into shadow.
The form itself is quietly confident. The gently flaring walls open comfortably toward the rim, making the bowl inviting in use, while the compact, iron-rich foot provides stability and a pleasing tactile contrast. Traces of kiln fire and subtle surface variations add depth, reinforcing the hand-crafted nature of the piece.
Chōsen Karatsu ware has long been favored in the tea world for its honest, unpretentious beauty and its resonance with wabi-sabi ideals.
