TC46 - Matcha Chawan Bowl of Shino-yaki 志野焼
This Shino-yaki (志野焼) matcha chawan embodies the gentle warmth and quiet expressiveness that define Shino ware. The bowl is coated in a soft, milky-white glaze, its surface alive with a fine network of crackle (kan’nyū). The glaze pools subtly in places and thins at the edges, revealing the character of the clay beneath and creating a natural, unforced rhythm across the surface.
Decorative brushwork appears beneath the glaze in contrasting tones. A vivid cobalt-blue motif stands out with bold yet fluid strokes, while adjacent areas of soft iron-black pigment provide balance and restraint. The interplay between blue and black is understated rather than decorative in excess, allowing the painted elements to feel like spontaneous gestures rather than fixed patterns. This restrained asymmetry is a hallmark of Shino aesthetics, where suggestion and imperfection are valued over precision.
The form of the bowl is gently rounded, with slightly irregular walls that sit comfortably in the hands. Its proportions feel calm and grounded, encouraging a slow, attentive moment when preparing and drinking matcha. The foot is modest and understated, finished in darker clay tones that anchor the bowl visually and provide a pleasing contrast to the pale glaze above.
This Shino chawan expresses a quiet poetry rooted in wabi-sabi. Its soft colors, subtle crackle, and spontaneous brushwork invite contemplation, making it not only a functional tea vessel but also an object that deepens in character through use and time.
