TC42 - Chawan Matcha Bowl of Ōhi-yaki 大樋焼

TC42 - Chawan Matcha Bowl of Ōhi-yaki 大樋焼

This Ōhi-yaki (大樋焼) matcha chawan is a charming and symbolic tea bowl rooted in seasonal custom and folk belief. Made in the warm, iron-rich clay characteristic of Ōhi ware, the bowl has a compact, grounded form with softly rounded walls. The surface shows the hallmark earthy tone of Ōhi-yaki—an orange-brown glaze with subtle variation, fine texture, and areas where the clay body gently reveals itself, giving the piece a rustic yet intimate presence well suited to tea practice.

What makes this chawan especially engaging is its playful yet meaningful inscription tied to the traditional Setsubun phrase 「鬼は外、福は内」(Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi), meaning “Demons out, good fortune in.” On the exterior of the bowl appears the character 鬼 (oni, demon), while inside the bowl is the character 福 (fuku, good fortune). This deliberate placement carries clear symbolism: misfortune and negative spirits are kept outside, while blessings, happiness, and prosperity are welcomed within. When matcha is prepared and enjoyed, the drinker quite literally gazes into “fortune,” reinforcing the auspicious intention of the phrase.

This Ōhi-yaki chawan balances warmth, humor, and cultural depth. It is a bowl that invites conversation and reflection, embodying the tea ceremony’s quiet joy while carrying a timeless wish: that misfortune stays outside, and good fortune resides within.
