TC41 - Shigaraki-yaki Chawan by Nishida Ryōei 西田亮栄
This chawan is a work of 信樂燒 (Shigaraki-yaki) by Nishida Ryōei (西田亮栄) of Sakae-gama (栄窯), a kiln known for producing tea ceramics that balance robust craftsmanship with quiet refinement. As one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, Shigaraki ware is celebrated for its earthy materiality, natural firing effects, and deep connection to the aesthetics of wabi-sabi—qualities that are strongly present in this bowl.
The chawan presents a dignified, grounded presence that immediately evokes the spirit of traditional tea ware. Its form is generous yet well-proportioned, with gently rising walls that sit securely in the hands. The interior reveals clear wheel-thrown rings, intentionally left visible beneath the glaze. These concentric traces create a subtle rhythm that draws the eye inward, speaking directly to the potter’s hand and the meditative process of making—an essential value within the tea ceremony.
The glaze is a warm amber-brown, characteristic of Shigaraki firing, with natural tonal variation created through interaction with heat and ash in the kiln. It pools softly in recessed areas and thins near the rim, allowing hints of the clay body to emerge. This balance between glaze and exposed earth gives the surface depth and movement, while the softly mottled texture reflects kiln effects rather than strict control, embracing the beauty of chance so central to Shigaraki ware.
The unglazed foot, finished in a pale, powdery white, provides a crisp visual contrast to the darker body and emphasizes the bowl’s lifted stance. This contrast highlights both stability and lightness, reinforcing the bowl’s quiet but confident presence.
Accompanied by its original wooden tomobako and a detailed biography card, the chawan comes with clear provenance. Nishida Ryōei’s artistic background, exhibitions, and awards—outlined in the enclosed document—underscore his standing as a ceramic artist deeply rooted in tradition while maintaining a personal, expressive voice.
