TC39 - Matcha Bowl Chawan of Karatsu-yaki 唐津焼
TC39 - Matcha Bowl Chawan of Karatsu-yaki 唐津焼
This chawan is a fine example of Karatsu-yaki (唐津焼) one of Japan’s oldest ceramic traditions, admired for its natural clay textures, understated beauty, and deep connection to the wabi-sabi aesthetic. Crafted from iron-rich Karatsu clay and finished with a soft, milky-gray glaze, the bowl displays a network of delicate 貫入 (kannyū) crackle lines that enhance its organic warmth and character.
Adorning the exterior is a brush-painted design of pine, bamboo, and plum—a classical motif known as 歳寒三友 (saikan sanyū, “The Three Friends of Winter”). This grouping has been celebrated in East Asian art for centuries as a symbol of resilience, integrity, and steadfastness. Pine represents longevity and steadfast spirit; bamboo symbolizes flexibility and uprightness; plum blossoms evoke purity and renewal, blooming even in the cold of winter. Together, they express the ideal qualities of a noble and enduring character.
The bowl’s softly rounded form sits atop a warm, unglazed reddish Karatsu foot, grounding the piece with earthy authenticity. Subtle variations in glaze pooling, brushwork, and clay texture speak to traditional Karatsu handcrafting, where spontaneity and natural expression are valued as much as precision.
