This refined 萬古焼(ばんこやき) matcha bowl, crafted by the potter Shinkyoku (慎旭), embodies the understated beauty and durable craftsmanship for which Banko ware is celebrated. The chawan features a deep iron-grey clay body with a sculptural, carved texture that wraps naturally around the form, evoking the rugged layers of stone or earth. Its matte sheen, subtle kiln shading, and hand-carved patterns reveal a bowl made to be appreciated both visually and tactilely.

Banko-yaki is a ceramic tradition with roots in the mid-Edo period, originating in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture. The name “萬古” was chosen by the founder, 沼波弄山 (Nunami Rōzan), to express his wish that the craft would continue eternally. Over nearly three centuries, Banko-yaki has become known as one of Japan’s nationally designated traditional crafts, valued for its distinctive clay, exceptional durability, and its quiet, earthy beauty.

Shinkyoku is part of this modern generation of Banko artisans who carry forward the tradition in their own expressive ways. His work reflects a deep understanding of Banko clay: the bowl’s iron-grey surface, atmospheric shading, and sculptural carving evoke geological layers shaped by time.

Banko-yaki embraces a subdued, natural palette—iron-rich greys, browns, and deep purples—that highlight the clay’s own personality. Many contemporary makers continue this tradition while exploring textures inspired by stone, earth, and landscape forms.
