TC27 - Kyō-yaki Matcha Bowl Chawan by Hōsen 宝泉

TC27 - Kyō-yaki Matcha Bowl Chawan by Hōsen 宝泉

Vintage item, never used. This Kyō-yaki (京焼) matcha chawan, crafted by Hōsen (宝泉), showcases the refined elegance and playful spirit characteristic of Kyoto’s long-established ceramic tradition. The bowl is decorated in a warm ivory glaze with fine kan-nyū crackle, contrasted by a bold red band encircling the exterior. Within this band appear whimsical line-drawn motifs associated with Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods (七福神), symbols of good fortune, prosperity, long life, and happiness.

Rendered in a traditional red-and-white color scheme, the illustrations include auspicious items linked to the Seven Gods, such as treasure scrolls, lucky mallets, treasure ships (宝船), and stylized waves—classic imagery celebrating abundance and good luck. These joyful motifs make the bowl not only a functional tea utensil but also a piece rich in cultural symbolism.

The form is balanced and comfortable in the hand, with a smooth interior ideal for whisking matcha. The soft crackle and warm tone of the glaze give the piece a gentle, inviting presence—hallmarks of Kyō-yaki’s delicate and decorative style.
