TC22 - Tea Bowl Chawan Kobushi-yaki こぶ志焼

TC22 - Tea Bowl Chawan Kobushi-yaki こぶ志焼

This Chawan exemplifies the refined yet earthy aesthetic of Kobushi-yaki, a pottery tradition from Hokkaido, Japan. Crafted from a light, coarse clay body, the bowl features a distinctive Namako-yu (sea cucumber glaze) — a hallmark of Kobushi-yaki ware.

The Namako glaze, with its deep indigo and ash-blue hues flowing into soft, frosted textures, evokes the mottled skin of a sea cucumber. The glossy surface transitions beautifully from a dark, almost black cobalt at the base to a creamy, foamed blue-white near the rim, the effect achieved through the interaction of feldspathic and ash-based glazes during high-temperature firing.

Inside, the glaze pools richly, forming subtle undulations and a mirror-like depth. The foot remains unglazed, showing the natural, sandy texture of the clay — a grounding contrast to the bowl’s luminous surface. A faint potter’s mark can be seen impressed near the foot ring, attesting to its handmade origin.

This Chawan embodies the serene simplicity of Japanese tea culture — a fusion of natural imperfection and deliberate craftsmanship that invites quiet contemplation with each use.
